Why Can't I Relax When I've Finally Earnt It?

"I finally have time for myself. So why can’t I settle?
The to-do list technically won't ever end, but no one (finally) needs anything from me right now. I could rest. I could watch something, go for a walk, read my book, have a bath, or sit outside with a coffee and do absolutely nothing.
I want to.
So why can't I just relax?"
It can be so hard when you finally have the space you've been craving, only to find that you can't quite settle into it. You’ve spent so long thinking about it, you don't know how to actually enjoy it anymore.
Once I finish this. Once things calm down. Once everyone is okay. Once I have some time.
And then the time finally comes.
But instead of relief, there’s resistance. Not intentionally, but enough to ensure that you can't fully thaw out. You might know exactly what you need. You might even be very good at talking about the importance of rest, boundaries and looking after yourself.
You know your needs matter. You know you’re allowed to slow down. You know you don't have to be productive every minute of the day.
But knowing isn't always the same as experiencing.
Sometimes, after spending so much time attuned to everyone else, there can be a period where you struggle to find your way back to yourself. What do I need? What would actually feel good right now? Do I even know?
You get antsy. For some reason, you decide you'll just check your phone and doomscroll for a bit to help you 'decompress' better. And for a little while, the discomfort goes away.
But so does your rest.
Your needs get put on pause again. Only this time, nobody else asked you to put them there.
This is the part of people-pleasing and over-functioning that can be particularly difficult to notice. Sometimes the pattern continues even when there is no one around to please.
One thing's for sure: you've become so practiced at moving away from yourself that the moment you finally have space to turn inward, you struggle to find your way back to yourself.
If this resonated, this doesn't mean it's another thing on your to-do list to fix. It's information about a part of you that has been waiting a very long time to be noticed. As a registered psychologist in Perth, I support those navigating people-pleasing, perfectionism, anxiety, burnout, and the lasting impact of putting their own needs aside.
And eventually, perhaps, to discover that you don't need to earn your way back to yourself.
You can just come home.
